DESCRIPTION:The Value Builder System helps business owners understand what drives the value of their company and how to increase it over time. Offered through the Missouri Small Business Development Center\, this confidential and comprehensive assessment gives you insight into your business from a buyer’s perspective. \nThe process begins with the Value Builder Score questionnaire\, which takes about 15 minutes to complete. Once finished\, you’ll receive an estimated business value\, an overall score out of 100\, and detailed results across eight key drivers of value. These drivers highlight specific strengths and areas for improvement that directly impact how attractive and valuable your business is in the marketplace. \nThe Value Builder System is useful whether you’re planning an exit or simply want to ensure you’re building a strong asset for the future. Improving your score can lead to real financial impact. DESCRIPTION:Winning Federal Research Grants: SBIR/STTR Workshop is an introductory seminar designed for technology-based businesses seeking research and development funding through federal programs. This session provides an overview of the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs and how they support innovation and commercialization. \nParticipants learn how to identify relevant grant opportunities\, understand program requirements\, and navigate the application process. The workshop also highlights best practices for strengthening proposals and increasing competitiveness in these highly selective funding programs. \nSBIR and STTR grants encourage domestic small businesses to participate in federal research and development efforts with strong potential for commercialization. These programs help small businesses explore new technologies\, reduce technical risk\, and move innovations closer to market. By engaging small businesses in the nation’s R&D efforts\, SBIR and STTR support both economic growth and technological advancement. \nNumerous Kansas City–area companies have successfully funded their research through SBIR and STTR grants\, with awards that can total up to $1.5 million per business. This workshop helps participants understand how their business could qualify and what steps are required to pursue this funding.

This dynamic\, interactive course focuses on helping you build a solid foundation before moving forward. \nThroughout the program\, you’ll learn how to validate your business idea by confirming there’s a market for your product or service. You’ll practice customer discovery and market research\, develop a clear elevator pitch\, and create customer personas to better understand who you’re serving. The course also covers important legal structures and considerations so you can make informed decisions early. \nIn addition to strategy and planning\, StartSmart introduces essential business fundamentals such as accounting\, bookkeeping\, pricing\, sales\, and basic HR topics like hiring and managing contractors. You’ll explore how these pieces fit together to support long-term profitability and growth. \nThe course includes access to the Proof to Profit customer discovery curriculum\, a comprehensive binder of worksheets and resources\, and group learning with guided discussions. Participants also receive one-on-one coaching with an SBDC business coach and access to the LivePlan toolkit to build a business plan and three years of sales projections.
